Balvenie 12 Year Double Wood is first aged in ex-bourbon American Oak casks, then transferred to ex-Oloroso sherry Spanish oak casks (often called European oak casks) for 9 months, and finally aged in large oak casks for 3-4 months to allow the whisky to blend the flavors of both casks before bottling. Each stage imparts unique characteristics to create a distinctive single malt. Traditional oak softens and adds a free-spirited style to the whisky, while Sherry oak provides depth and richness to the flavor.
